What is teen therapy?

Teen therapy is counseling built for people who are old enough to want privacy and respect, but young enough to need guidance they can actually use. Sessions are one-on-one and confidential, within the normal limits, and the direction comes from what your teen wants to work on.

Teens come to us for things like:

  • Anxiety, stress, and feeling constantly on edge

  • Low mood, hopelessness, or losing interest in things they used to enjoy

  • School pressure, grades, and motivation

  • Friendship problems, bullying, and social media stress

  • Family conflict and communication breakdowns

  • Self-esteem and identity questions

  • Grief and loss

  • Big decisions about the future

If a teen is not sure what to talk about, that is fine too. Plenty of good sessions start with "I don't know, everything, I guess." We know how to work from there.

How we help

Our therapists use approaches with a strong research track record, including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, and solution-focused work, adapted to fit each teen. The first goal is trust. Teens open up when they realize the session belongs to them and nothing they say gets reported back home without their knowledge.

Parents still matter enormously, so we build in check-ins. Families decide together what stays private and what gets shared, which teaches teens that honesty and boundaries can coexist. When family conflict is part of the picture, our family therapy program can support the whole household alongside individual sessions.

Signs your teen may benefit from therapy

Reach out if you are noticing:

  • Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to love

  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy

  • Slipping grades or skipped assignments

  • Irritability, anger, or constant conflict at home

  • Talk of being overwhelmed, hopeless, or "over it"

  • Risky behavior, or more secrecy than usual

  • Anything that says self-harm or suicide, even a passing comment. If you ever have immediate concerns about your teen's safety, call or text 988 right away.

Parents often wait, hoping a rough patch will pass on its own. Some do. But most teens tell us later that they wished someone had asked sooner.

What the first visit looks like

The first session is low-key. We get to know your teen as a person, not a problem. What they are into, what has been hard lately, what they would change if they could. If they want the parent in the room for the first few minutes, that works. If they would rather talk alone, that works too.

Before you leave, we will talk through a rough plan, how often to meet, and what the next few weeks could look like. Teens get a real voice in that plan. When they help set the goals, they show up for them.

It gets better, and there is a path there

We have watched teens walk in closed off and walk out, a few months later, standing taller. Grades recover. Friendships repair. Kids who fought every curfew start talking at dinner again. None of it happens overnight, but all of it happens, regularly, right here in Kearney.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will everything my teen says stay private? Within the standard safety limits that apply to all licensed therapists, yes. We explain those limits clearly in the first session, to both teens and parents.

2.What if my teen refuses to go?

Start with a low-pressure conversation. Many teens agree to "just try it once" when they know they will not be lectured or interrogated afterward. We can also coach parents on how to frame the first visit.

3. How long does teen therapy last?

It varies. Some teens feel steadier within a couple of months, while others want support across a school year. We review progress together and keep it flexible.

4. Can sessions happen online?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth anywhere in Nebraska, which many teens prefer, either full-time or mixed with in-person visits.
